Customizing Edge Web App Pins

The new Microsoft Edge allows you to install websites as applications so they open in their own window and work like a real app. But what if you want to pin multiple versions of the same app?

It’s a great feature and something I’ve used for years in Chrome (before Edge joined the Chromium family) for sites like YouTube Music, Spotify, Twitter, Outlook, and more.

But one of my more unique needs is to install multiple instances of the same app. For example, I have Outlook ‘installed’ three times for different mail accounts of mine — each from a different Edge profile.

While I may know the left-most icon is my personal email, I’d really like these icons to be distinct.

How to Customize Edge Web App Taskbar Pins

So here’s the trick: tell Edge to pin it to your desktop first so you can customize it, the drag it to your taskbar. Here’s how:

1. First install the app. From any website, choose the ••• menu and select Apps > Install this site as an app.
2. Go back to the same menu and choose Manage Apps.
3. Right-click the app name and choose Pin To… Desktop.
4. Go to your desktop and edit the shortcut with a new name and icon.
5. Drag it to your taskbar.
6. Optionally delete the desktop icon (or keep it, you do you).

Now you’ll have visually recognizable app icons on your taskbar with unique names.
