An Xbox caption scaling issue I had today triggered a memory of a Windows 3.1 app called Tiny Elvis—a piece of freeware with a UI that consisted entirely of 16×16 .ani icon in the approximate pixelated likeness of a country singer of the same name.

This is back when general computing was pushing new boundaries, clearly. It was actually a spoof of an SNL “Tiny Elvis” sketch from 1992.

The software would run in the background and periodically animate the Elvis icon and play a short quip in the form of a wav audio file.

“Say man, check out the size of that caption over there, that sucker’s huge.”

Tiny Elvis

And what prompted this bit of random free-associated nostalgia?

You can listen to the somewhat poor Elvis impersonations (my mother swears it sounded like President Clinton) in the extracted wave sound files, at https://cmdrkeene.com/r/tinyelvisaudio.
