Closed Captions Should be Modernized

Now that overscan is not a concern, I wish TV manufacturers would consider docking captions to the edge of the screen instead of floating over the video. Take a look.

Why is this not a thing?

The benefit is pretty apparent from this example. Docking captions at the side would prevent obscuring the content and the consistent location simultaneously makes reading easier for the viewer that desires captions, while easier to ignore for the viewers that don’t. I’d honestly even prefer this on personal viewing devices like my phone.

That’s really my only point here: captions should be better. Write to your congressman or your TV manufacturer (probably the latter) and thanks for coming to my talk.
